Hats used to be a staple in men’s fashion, but somewhere along the way, men stopped wearing hats and they preferred to go bareheaded. Some people say that men’s fashion is a lot poorer now because of this neglect men have with the use of hats. There are those however who still prefer to wear some form of headgear. Today hats are normally worn out of necessity or as part of some uniform. Wearing hats for fashion has become a rare thing these days. Hats are usually worn for casual events like when going to a ball game or just driving around, but rarely would you see someone attending an affair while wearing a stylish and expensive hat.
Here are some of the more common types of hats today and the different ways on how to wear them:
The Beenie Hat
Sometimes called the skull cap because it fits tightly on the head, this type of hat is usually made from cotton. In the past these hats were worn during the cold season. In the past few years however people have started to associate it with those who are engaged in extreme sports like skating, mountain biking, and skiing.
Fedora
This type of hat first came out in the 19th century and was associated with the wealthy as it is still today. The usual way to wear this to have a pinched front that marks the place where the wearer normally grabs the hat to remove it from his head.
The Bowler
This type of hat is associated in the minds of many people with the actor Charles Chaplin. His character, the Tramp, always wore this type of hat and together with his toothbrush mustache it was his trademark. No English gentleman at that time would even think of leaving his house without a bowler perched on top of his head. Wearing this hat is straightforward. It is placed on the head with the rim horizontal to the ground. Though a slight tilt of the rim can add a daring and dashing look.
Snapback Hats
Snapbacks first became popular in 1980s when rap stars and hip hop artists started to sport them as the best fashion expression. Young people started to wear them as an essential piece of accessory. They became even more popular because they were associated with the different college and professional sports teams. Hats with the logos of these teams became hot merchandise. There are different ways to wear a snapback hat and it depends on the wearer to choose which one would fit his style.
In fact, because of the popularity of snapback hats there are probably more ways to wear these hats than any of the other hats on this list. Basically, you have the traditional style like baseball players wear them. The peak is pointed forward over the eyes and is curved in a frown. As you move the peak to the side you start to get into more hip hop fashion style and wearing the peak at the back of the head is a neutral style that works well from hip hop to casual fashion.
For an edgier style, the peak should be flat like a straight line and you can iron it to help get it this way. Then if you curl the end of the peak upwards like a snarl or the curve on the end of a skateboard, you get a very edgy, very hip look. A snapback hat with flat peak but a curled end is the epitome of cool at the moment. In my opinion, wearing this front, side or backwards is just a personal style difference and doesn’t add to the allure or coolness of the look. Play around with the peak and see if you can’t start a new fashion statement. What about bending the peak into a v or rolling the peak right into a roll from the curve spoken of earlier. The cool thing about snapback hats is that there is no end to the styles you can come up with.
Trilby Hat
This is very much like the Fedora except for the fact that it does not have the pinched look at the front of the hat. This kind of hat was devised as an expression of style and elegance more than any other hat type. The brim of the Trilby is usually straight. The usual colors for this kind of hat are black and brown which emphasizes the fact that this hat is worn mostly by people with a conservative outlook. As such it is usually worn with the brim of the that horizontal to the ground. But if you’re not that conservative, give it a tilt, it’ll make you stand out from the crowd.
Those are just a few of the different hats that are available today for men and some of the ways in which you can wear them. From these 5 different types of hats you are sure to find something that will match your own personal style and taste.
