Tables are a Big Part of Our Life

Have you ever thought about how many different types of tables there are? Most of us have several different types in our own home; they are for eating on, to go by the couch, even a dressing table for applying makeup or fixing our hair. There are a lot more tables used for different things than that.

The kitchen or dining room table is the first one that comes to mind if you think them. This is an important part of family life because when you sit around the table to eat, you actually talk to each other. The evening meal becomes a time to find out how school or work is going when everyone is sitting down together without the distraction of the TV.

Most homes have coffee tables and end tables in their living room for holding remote controls, lamps, drinks, etc. There are also higher tables used for decoration, such as you might put in the entrance way. They are there as much for décor as for a convenient place to drop your car keys and briefcase when you get home from work.

The dressing table, usually found in the master bedroom or master bath, came with a chair and an attached mirror. Loaded with the needed makeup, it was very common at one time. Whether it was smaller bedrooms or less time in the mornings, they are not seen as much as they once were.

Both parks and campgrounds are full of picnic tables. You may even have one in your back yard. These come in all shapes and sizes, and represent good summer fun, bringing back wonderful childhood memories. In a restaurant, you might see a buffet table, when you go for a massage, you lay on a massage table, at a trade show, products and pamphlets cover a display table, and an operation is performed on an operating table. Tables have been around for hundreds of years, and the uses for them continue to grow. It makes you wonder what other things they will be used for a hundred years from now.

So the next time you pass the kitchen table, take a good look at it. Remember when you would hurry to clear it from supper so you had room to do your homework? Or was it at that table you shared the news of your promotion with your family? It almost seems more like a part of the family than just a piece of furniture.
